Chicago IRS Assistance Lawyer

It is the end of another year and while that has many people thinking about the holidays, there is something else on people’s minds at this time of year. That is taxes. While there are still months to file for the 2023 year, the beginning of the year is when many people start thinking about their taxes, collecting important paperwork, and getting organized.

If you are like most, tax preparation season is something you dread. Filing taxes can be confusing and annoying, but it does not have to be. The IRS offers many assistance programs that can help people file their taxes properly and on time. Below, our Chicago IRS assistance lawyer explains what they are.

IRS Free File

The IRS Free File program is a collaboration between the government agency and private tax preparation and filing companies, such as FreeTaxUSA and exTaxReturn. Although these companies usually charge a fee for using their software programs, the IRS Free File program allows some taxpayers to use these services free of charge.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is one of two in-person programs offered by the IRS. The VITA program provides basic tax return preparation for free to those who qualify. VITA is open to the following:

  • Individuals who earn $58,000 or less,
  • Individuals with disabilities, and
  • Taxpayers with limited English skills

The IRS oversees the VITA program but it is operated solely by volunteers who are certified by the government agency. These volunteers are located throughout the country. The volunteers receive training that meets or exceeds requirements outlined by the IRS, making the program a great cost-free resource for many people.

Interactive Tax Assistance

The Interactive Tax Assistance (ITA) program answers many different questions about tax code that are specific to an individual’s circumstances. The program provides a long list of specific questions regarding a number of different circumstances and for every question, there is a corresponding answer. There are many categories listed in the ITA program including filing requirements, filing status, retirement accounts, credits, deductions, other income, and more.

Where’s My Refund?

If you are wondering about the status of your tax refund, Where’s My Refund? is a great tool to use. You only need to provide basic information such as your filing status, your Social Security numbers, and the specific amount of your refund. After providing this information, the IRS will then provide you with an update on the current status of your tax refund. You can access this information on the IRS’ website or on the agency’s mobile app. It is best to wait at least 24 hours after filing your tax return online, or four weeks after sending it by mail, to determine if there are any updates.
